The Salida School District Board of Education has approved a new student phone policy, set to take effect at the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. This decision follows extensive discussion, research and results of similar policy changes in other communities, local community input, and careful consideration of student well-being and academic focus.

The new policy aims to create a more productive learning environment by limiting student phone use during school hours. While acknowledging the importance of communication and safety, the board believes this measure will help minimize distractions and enhance student engagement.

The book Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt was a key reference for the board as they considered changes to the student phone use policy. They also reviewed additional research supporting a student phone use policy. This research, coupled with guidance from the U.S. Surgeon General's warning regarding social media, was pivotal in shaping the policy.

The district's Social Emotional Learning (SEL) webpage on the Salida School District website was used to share initial thoughts, research, and draft policy as well as a position paper reflecting changes related to the proposed policy.

Details of the policy, including specific guidelines and exceptions, will be communicated to students, parents, and staff in the coming months through a number of different channels. The district is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and providing support to students, families, and staff.

“I’ve valued speaking with students, parents, staff, and citizens. We want to have a healthy climate in all of our buildings,” said Board Vice President Jodi Breckenridge Petit. “Our goal is to create an environment where students can thrive academically and socially. We believe this policy is a step in that direction.”

The Salida School District is dedicated to providing a high-quality education and fostering a positive learning environment for all students.
