Families of Longfellow Elementary-
I usually like to ease into my letters, but I want to start this one strongly encouraging everyone to download the new district app. The old app will no longer be used. The app is the foundation by which communication will be made to district families. It is used to inform families of our drills, any actual emergencies that we work through, snow days, and more. Due to tech updates, the district has moved to this new platform. If you had downloaded the app in past years, you should remove it and utilize the new one. The old app had the Spartan head as its icon. The new app utilizes the school district’s “S” logo as its icon. You can click the links below to access the downloads for the new app for Apple and Android…

On the subject of safety and communication, I wanted to remind everyone of our reunification drill next Wednesday, August 28th. Below is a bulleted list of things to remember:
1st through 4th grade students will be dismissed at 2:00. Boys and Girls club will be open early and the Boys and Girls Club bus will run at 2:00. All regular buses will run as well. Expect your child to arrive home early.
Kindergarten students will be participating in the reunification drill. Parents will be notified by the new app (directions above) that the process has begun. Parents should then head to the main doors of the school.
Kindergarten parents (or the person on the emergency contact list who will be picking up the child) should have a photo ID ready so that we may confirm the contact information.
We’ll be working with our local law enforcement to make sure this process is as efficient and orderly as possible.
Once reunified with their correct person, the student and family are free to leave and enjoy the rest of their afternoon.
I truly appreciate everyone working with us on this. I know it can be difficult on families, but it allows us as a staff to work through systems with our community partners that ensure that your child is safe in any situation and helps us work on the best way to connect our students with those they love.
A final consideration to help keep our kids safe is to have conversations about how to deal with our local town deer. I know there is a little humor to this, but please be sure to remind your kiddos that they are wild animals and that they should not try to approach, chase, or pet them. Yesterday, I spent the afternoon chasing some of our furry friends off the playground. It caused a lot of excitement and I had to remind several of our students to give them room and not try to run after them. I worry that one of our students will find out that Bambi is not as sweet as she looks.
Thank you all,
Cory Scheffel
LES Principal
