Two adults and two students play math games at a table during Monster Mash Math Night.

Longfellow Families,

I’d like to start this week by extending my sincerest gratitude to the Royal Gorge Field Office of the BLM and GARNA for presenting our 4th graders with the “Every Kid Outdoors” pass. The passes allow our students to access any of our 63 national parks free of charge for a whole year. Our country’s wild areas are what drew many of us to this incredible valley. It is truly a gift of wonder.

Last night, we hosted Monster Mash Math Night. We had about 400 people show up to learn family math games they could use to reinforce their kids' math skills. Teaching kids at a young age to view the world through a mathematical lens can have a big impact throughout their lives as students. Kids aged 3 to 5 can learn math that is surprisingly complex. Having a math mindset can help students with their motivation as they learn math throughout the years. The evening was rounded out with a pizza dinner for all. Special thanks to all our staff for the extra work they put in so our families could come celebrate math with us. Monsters? Math? Monster Math!

Next Thursday is Halloween. Excitement abounds among the students. Classroom celebrations will occur Thursday after 2:15. Classroom teachers have communicated grade level expectations for costumes and costume preparations. If your family does not celebrate Halloween, we fully understand. Students may be checked out starting at 2:00.

As we head into this time of year, we ask that you limit the amount of candy they bring to school. One piece per day is plenty. It is helpful if you phrase it as their “treat” for the end of lunch. Now is the time to help them learn balance and healthy habits. While I’d personally love to wipe out a bag of peanut butter cups, somewhere along the line I learned that it wasn’t the best thing for me.

Finally, as I’m thinking of the best way to start working off all the extra calories I’ve gained as part of my love of Halloween candy, the answer presented itself…the Mountain Lion Fun Run on November 2nd! You can find the link to sign up yourself and your student below.

Thank you for all your support,

Cory Scheffel, Longfellow Principal
