Families of Longfellow Elementary-
I want to start this week sharing the immense pride I have in the staff here at Longfellow Elementary. A few weeks back, the folks over at the administration office were pulling some of our 4th grade CMAS state testing data and comparing it to other schools across the state. While no test paints a complete picture of success, we use it as an indicator of how we’re doing as a staff and use it to inform us about how we can get better. Longfellow students have been number one in the state for the last 3 years running when it comes to math achievement. Longfellow students have been in the top 5 in the state for the last 3 years when it comes to English Language Arts achievement. There are over 1000 elementary schools in the state! This is truly a reflection of all our teachers from Kindergarten through 4th grade. This is a reflection of our Interventionists and our Special Education teams. This is a reflection of our Specials teachers. This is even a reflection of our custodians, our kitchen staff and our transportation staff. I’m immensely proud of the work everyone on this team does. We aren’t perfect, but we do our best and will continue to do our best for your kids.
Another area we are always trying to get better in is safety. It is our number one priority. In an effort to make sure our kids are safe at the end of each day, I ask for your help in the area of bussing and end of the day routines.
-If you pick up your 3rd or 4th grader at the end of the day, please don’t wait in the street or along the sidewalk by the buses. This allows the drivers and staff to make sure that our bus kids get to their appropriate buses before they leave for their afternoon routes.
-If there is any change in the end of the day routine (i.e. change in bus route, boys and girls club, pick up, walking, etc.) please call the office at 719-530-5260 by 3 p.m. at the latest. This allows us to communicate with the homeroom teacher and student before the end of the day. Teachers aren’t always able to check their email or apps for messages, so this is the best way to communicate at the end of the day.
Finally, I need to beat the lost and found drum one more time. It’s gone down, but it seems when one coat leaves, two more return. Please, please, please check to see if any of your kids' stuff may have found its way in there. The last day before break, we will be donating the remaining items to the folks in need so that they can keep someone warm over the winter months.
Thank you,
Cory Scheffel
