Families of Longfellow Elementary-
Last Friday, the Longfellow staff had a professional development day to continue our growth as educators. Our second through fourth grade teachers combined with Middle School and Crest Math teachers to expand their knowledge in Mathematics instruction. The presenters were from the Developing Mathematical Thinkers Institute and much of the focus was on building conceptual knowledge first and then growing into the algorithms. During this time, the specials teachers were working on vertical alignment at the district offices while the kindergarten and first grade teams developed a technology plan to take us into the future. I truly appreciate the staff here and their eye on continual growth. You’ve heard me sing the staff’s praises about how good they are, but it is this continual focus on growth that will ensure the success of our students for years to come.
I wanted to say a big thank you to all the parents who have come in already to search through the lost and found. My favorite was hearing a parent as they took one step through the main doors tell their child, “I see it already.” They were happily reunited with their coat and the student had a warm recess.
Finally, I have an ask of all the families out there. Please check your child’s backpack for any toys that may have been snuck in there. When this happens, students often spend the day thinking about their toy. Sometimes the toy discreetly makes its way into the students desk, making focus doubly hard. If you get push back just let them know that the toy will be there for them to play with when they get home.
Thank you for your continued support of Longfellow,
Cory Scheffel
Sidenotes:
-Valentine's day is right around the corner. Teachers will be communicating out the plans for each grade level. Please do not send Valentines to the office to be delivered to your child. It is disruptive for the learning of the whole class. Any Valentines received will be held until the end of the day.
-Spring conferences will be held during the 3rd week in February. During this round, we’ll be doing conferences by parent request and we’ll also be reaching out if a student is struggling.
Reminder: Our outside supervision starts at 7:50 before school. After school, outside supervision ends at 4:00. We want all our kids to be safe and families to know when they can expect the supervision “hand-off” to happen.
