Students enjoy breakfast with first responders

Families of Longfellow Elementary-

It has been a busy week as we head towards spring break. We’ve had many of our local first responders in and around our building. I’d like to take a moment to thank them for all they do. Time and again, they step up for our kids. They are friends. They are our neighbors. They are an important part of our school community.

Early in the week, the 2nd grade had several of our local first responders visit to do read-alouds in celebration of Read Across America. We had guests from Chaffee County Sheriff, Salida Police Department, and Salida Fire Department. Thanks goes out to Mrs. Groover for organizing this event and to all the first responders for sharing that reading is a part of every job.

Many of our local first responders came back this morning and joined our students for breakfast to celebrate National School Breakfast Week. It was a way to recognize all the work that goes into making school breakfasts for our kids and was a thank you to our first responders.  On an average day, our school kitchen serves between 100 and 120 breakfasts. This helps about a quarter of our students start the day right with a full belly. If your child eats school breakfast, make sure they are here between 7:50 and 8:00 and have them head straight into the cafeteria. That way, we can get them fed before the bell rings.

Later this morning,  we held our March evacuation drill in partnership with the Salida Fire Department and the Salida Police Department. As a school, we were able to evacuate almost 500 people in an orderly fashion in under three minutes. I was truly proud of students and staff as we work to make sure we’re prepared in case an emergency were to arise.

I’d like to end this week with a thank you to all our students, staff, and families. Spring break is right around the corner. The January, February, and March months can seem cold and long, but the smiles and joy in our building is that ray of sunshine that makes it all worth it.

Thank you,

Cory Scheffel
