Families of Longfellow Elementary-
If you’ve dropped off or picked up your child during the school day lately, you may have noticed the tablet in our entry area. This is part of the district’s new Visitor Aware program. The Visitor Aware program is designed to verify guests and volunteers, account for people in a crisis, and assist with reunifications. Over the past few weeks, several families have helped us test the system. When picking up your child for an appointment, you simply scan your driver's license into the tablet. After that, the computer pops up an image on the secretaries’ computers which they can cross reference with our Infinite Campus households. If the person is entering the building, it also prints a volunteer badge with their picture on it, so that all students and staff know that they are a welcomed visitor. We are early in the testing phase, with plans to utilize it for all volunteer access and student check-out’s next year. The biggest hurdle we’ve encountered so far is families remembering to bring their ID. If you are picking up your student over the next few weeks, bring your ID and help us test the system. As with everything new, it’s a little clunky at first, but once you’ve gone through the process, it’s easy to figure out. Student safety is something we take seriously. This system is just another small step in making sure all our students are safe.
Another small change we’re making with an eye on safety is how we notify families of their class placements at the end of the summer. In the past, we’ve posted class lists on the doors. In an effort to honor student and family confidentiality, we’ll be shifting to families finding out their teachers through Infinite Campus. If you haven’t already accessed your student’s Infinite Campus account online, you can reach out to the office for assistance. They will make sure you have a username and password and can get signed into the Infinite Campus app. As always, class placements will happen in early August. While it’s a ways off, we’re excited and starting to get things set for the 25/26 school year.
Finally, we are entering field trip season. It may seem like we pack it all in at the end, but we do so with the hopes of good weather. If your child is going on a field trip, please be sure they have what they need to make it an enjoyable time. Today, it may be a raincoat and hat, tomorrow it may be sunscreen and sunglasses. Look for communication from your classroom teachers that can help with dates and specific needs for all the fun ahead. Remembering a math test is rare, but the fun days and field trips are what forms fond memories for years to come.
Thank you all,
Cory Scheffel
