Families of Longfellow Elementary-
Phew! It is a hot start to the year. As you may have heard from your student, the building has been hot, too. Of course, this would be the time when our HVAC system starts acting up. Our maintenance crew has been working with Tolin Mechanical to diagnose and fix the issue. As I write this, it still isn’t perfect, but everyone is still at it and will be until this problem is figured out. I appreciate students’ and staff patience in dealing with the heat over this past week.
Also, with the start of the year, we’re always working to adjust systems in an effort to help with our student safety. During drop off time in the morning, we ask that parents stay off the main playground. You may see some members of our “trusted adult” program out there. If this program interests you, please stop by the office for a volunteer form. You can also help out during pickup time by waiting for your student away from the building doors. For our kindergarten parents, please wait on the asphalt of the circle drive. For our 1st and 2nd grade parents, please wait on the grassy zone behind the fence or under the shade structure on the playground. For our 3rd and 4th grade parents, please wait in the rocks behind the fence. This allows the teachers the opportunity to get their students connected to the correct person or headed to their correct bus and helps make for a smooth and safe hand-off.
On the subject of safety and communication, I wanted to remind everyone of our reunification drill next Monday, August 25th. Below is a bulleted list of things to remember:
1st through 4th grade students will be dismissed at 2:00. Boys and Girls club will be open early and the Boys and Girls Club bus will run at 2:00. All regular buses will run as well. Expect your child to arrive home early.
Kindergarten students will be participating in the reunification drill. Parents will be notified by the app (directions below) that the process has begun. Parents should then head to the main doors of the school.
Kindergarten parents (or the person on the emergency contact list who will be picking up the child) need a photo ID ready so that we may confirm the contact information.
We’ll be working with our local law enforcement to make sure this process is as efficient and orderly as possible.
Once reunified with their correct person, the student and family are free to leave and enjoy the rest of their afternoon.
I truly appreciate everyone working with us on this. I know it can be difficult on families, but it allows us as a staff to work through systems with our community partners that ensure that your child is safe in any situation and helps us work on the best way to connect our students with those they love.
The app utilizes the school district’s “S” logo as its icon. You can click the links below to access the downloads for the app for Apple and Android…
