Longfellow Elementary School

Families of Longfellow Elementary,

Even with the shortened week, there’s always plenty going on at Longfellow Elementary. Our focus on safety continued today as we worked with all students to perform our recess drills. These drills help students know what to do if an emergency happens while they are at recess. Thanks go out to our playground supervision crew, for their help and insight as the students practiced “how to know, and where to go” if there was an emergency while they were outside playing.

Also on the issue of safety, we continue our growth with our Visitor Aware system at the front entrance to our building. This system utilizes a person’s ID to perform a quick cross reference to ensure that an adult is safe to be around our students. Up until this point in the year, we’ve been utilizing it to cross reference all adults entering the building to volunteer. Our next step is to utilize it for times when families check a student in or out during the school day. To help us grow in this area, we ask that all families remember to bring a photo ID when checking their students out. With all things new, there will be issues and considerations we have to work through. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to adapt this into our building systems.

This week, we wrapped up our beginning of the year NWEA Math and Reading assessments. These district-level assessments allow staff to see how a student is progressing throughout the school year. The beginning of the year assessment sets the baseline and then we take a middle of the year assessment and an end of the year assessment to see how our students are progressing throughout the year.

Next week, 4th graders will take their annual field trip to St. Elmo. The trip addresses some of our Colorado History Standards by highlighting the mining history of the St. Elmo area. On this trip, students get to explore many of the buildings that are off limits to the general public. The highlight of the trip is the one-room school house where students find out what school life was like over 100 years ago.

If you’d like to accompany your child on a field trip throughout the year, please be sure to fill out our volunteer background check form in the office. These forms only take about a week to process and are required for anyone working with our students.

Finally, this upcoming week, the Longfellow Parent Association is hosting its first general membership meeting. Everyone is welcome and dinner and childcare will be provided. Please come and support this great organization. I encourage everyone to get involved with LPA. You can help a little or a lot. If you are new to our building this is a great way to network and to get to know families throughout our community.

Thank you for another wonderful week,
Cory Scheffel
Longfellow Principal

Bookmobile- The Bookmobile is returning to Longfellow! Starting today, September 4th, and continuing most Thursdays after that, you can get your kids books from the Salida Regional Library Bookmobile!

● Thursdays from 3:15-4:15 on the corner of H and 8th Street.

● Kids will need a parent with them to get a library card. Once kids have a card, parents do not need to be present to check out a book.

● If kids want to get a library card, but don't have a parent with them, they can take home a page titled "Permission for a Library Card" and bring it back to the Bookmobile signed by a parent or guardian the following week to get a card
