Salida school bus

Longfellow Families,

Last Thursday, we held our first assembly of the year for our 1st through 4th grade students. The assembly was put on by the Creede Repertory Theatre and was a presentation of the bilingual play “Raquel’s Purple Pineapple Adventures.” It was the perfect play for Longfellow as it highlights Raquel and her nervousness about reading. In the end, Raquel overcomes her difficulties, strengthens her resilience, and makes her Mama sooo proud. I’d like to thank the Longfellow Parents Association for helping us fund this event, and I’d like to give a huge shout out to our students whose assembly behavior was impeccable!

Speaking of the Longfellow Parent Association (LPA), on Tuesday they held their first membership meeting of the year in the Longfellow cafeteria. During these meetings, dinner is served and childcare is provided. Time and time again, you will hear me thank LPA for all they do. Throughout the year, they support our school and make it warm and welcoming for our students and staff. Last Friday, they provided staff breakfast for our professional development day. In the weeks ahead, you’ll see a new gaga pit added to our playground equipment. This is all thanks to the LPA. They are truly a huge part of what makes our school a community. I’d like to encourage everyone to become a member, to consider serving as a board member, or helping with the many events they host to tie our school community together. If you are interested in getting involved, email them at lpa@salidaschools.org.

Yesterday and today, we had our first field trips of the year with our 4th graders going to St. Elmo to learn about our local mining history. I’d like to thank our 4th grade team for putting this trip together and our transportation department for making sure our students travel safely to and from these fun events.

On the issue of transportation, I ask that all students going to Boys and Girls Club after school take the Boys and Girls Club bus. We’ve had a few students asking to walk lately, and while I appreciate the growing independence, I want to make sure our students make it across town safely.

To wrap up this week, I’d like to ask parents to remind their students to leave their toys at home. There are times when there may be a class celebration in which they are allowed to bring a stuffed animal or a board game, but for the most part, it’s best to leave the toys at home.

Thank you all for your support,

Cory Scheffel
Longfellow Principal
