Longfellow Families,
I’d like to start out this week with a huge thank you to the Longfellow Parent Association for the new gaga pit on our playground. Gaga ball is a variation of dodgeball and can be played by up to 10 students at a time. It has caused a lot of excitement among the students. Coach Gardunio worked through lessons about how to play gaga with our 3rd and 4th graders. For our Kindergarteners through 2nd graders, just playing in the pit as an imaginary fort has been a huge hit. My sincerest thanks goes out to the LPA and all they do for the Longfellow community.
With the turning of the leaves and the cooler weather, comes the Halloween season. There are a ton of events right around the corner. My favorite is Longfellow’s own, “Monster Mash Math Night”. Next Wednesday, October 29th from 5:00 to 6:30, students will be invited to participate in Math games with their families throughout the building. A pizza dinner will be served. Please bring your own water bottles as we are working to minimize our waste.
The next day, Thursday October 30th, Longfellow will be celebrating Halloween. Classroom celebrations will occur after 2:30. Look to your classroom teachers for communication about grade level expectations for the day. If your family does not celebrate Halloween, we fully understand. Students may be checked out starting at 2:00.
In addition to our in-house offerings there are many other events happening around town starting tomorrow. There are events at the high school, Columbine Manor, and other community organizations. Check out the posters near our entryways for more information.
Throughout the year, you may see students bringing home optional “Let Grow” projects. These projects are intended to build responsibility and independence among our students. You can learn more about the Let Grow project here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ60mAHeCqE
In the coming weeks, the Longfellow Parent Association will be hosting a Community Clothing Swap. Donations will be collected in the Longfellow parking lot November 3rd through the 5th and the swap will take place inside the cafeteria on November 7th and outside on the playground on November 8th. Donated clothes should be clean and elementary student sized. Please no underwear, socks, toys or books.
Finally, I wanted to share that we are aware of the pending end of SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown. With the cost of living in our community I know many of our families rely on this service to get by. If you are having difficulty, please reach out to the front office and we can connect you with community organizations that can help out.
Thank you for being an incredible community!
Cory Scheffel
Longfellow Principal
Notes:
-Stop by Lost and Found to look for your student’s lost items. All items left in Lost and Found will be donated on November 4th. Please write your student’s name on all their coats, water bottles, and lunch boxes to aid in reuniting lost items.
-Monster Mash Math Night is Wednesday 10/29 5:00-6:30. Bring the family!
