Longfellow Elementary School

Longfellow Families,

Last night, we hosted Monster Mash Math Night. It was an amazing event that celebrated all things math. We had about 400 people show up to learn family math games they could use to reinforce their kids' math skills. Teaching kids at a young age to view the world through a mathematical lens can have a big impact throughout their lives as students. Having a math mindset can help students with their motivation as they learn math throughout the years. The evening was rounded out with a pizza dinner for all. Special thanks to all our staff for the extra work they put in so our families could come celebrate math with us. Monsters+Math=Monster Math!.

On this subject, I know many of you will be heading out tomorrow night with your families to enjoy some trick or treating Salida style. With costumes in place, many families head down to F street to enjoy the decorations, the thriller dance, and a chance to see their Longfellow friends. Our kids bring so much joy to everyone in our community. Please remember the neighbors and family members who aren’t able to be a part of the festivities. Consider a quick trick or treat at their homes or simply stopping by to show off their costumes. Kids can bring a little joy into everyone’s life.

Also, on the subject of candy, please limit the amount of candy sent to school to one piece per day. Classroom teachers may also have specific guidelines. Every year, at least one of our students will bring their entire “haul” to school. When this happens, I have to laugh (and then give the subtle reminder to put it away and to leave it at home in the future.)

Next Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., we have our regularly scheduled fall conferences. Some families have already been in the building connecting with classroom teachers on how we can all work together to make sure our kids are successful. Our goal is to connect with every family. Be sure to have one scheduled with your child’s teacher to see how they are doing. Also, while you're in the building please remember to check lost and found. It’s brimming full and we want to get the items to the rightful owners. Right before Thanksgiving break, we’ll be donating the items left to local nonprofits (so they can help everyone have a warm winter too!)

Finally, on the subject of clothing, the Longfellow Parent Association will be hosting a Community Clothing Swap. Donations will be collected in the Longfellow parking lot November 3rd through the 6th and the swap will take place inside the cafeteria on November 7th and outside on the playground on November 8th. Donated clothes should be clean and elementary student sized. Please no underwear, socks, toys or books.

Thank you for all your support,
Cory Scheffel
Longfellow Principal

Notes:

Parent Teacher Conferences, Nov. 4th and 5th from 4-7 p.m.

Stop by Lost and Found to look for your student’s lost items. All items left in Lost and Found will be donated on November 4th. Please write your student’s name on all their coats, water bottles, and lunch boxes to aid in reuniting lost items.

Elevating Readers is working on raising money to bring a visiting author to the Crest Academy and Longfellow again this year. They found out recently that a big grant they applied for was not granted. If you have a business that would like to make a donation, be a sponsor, or if your family is personally interested in donating, please, reach out. You can email directly at dbassobrien@salidaschools.org or call at 719-530-5391.
