Families of Longfellow Elementary-
With the season of thanks upon us, I’d like to start by thanking Mrs. Giangiulio and the 1st graders for their incredible performance “Pajama Party” last week. The joy on the kids’ faces said it all as they had the chance to shine on stage. I am constantly amazed by the incredible performances Mrs. G puts together with our students.
Further thanks goes out to our kitchen staff. Yesterday, they served our annual Thanksgiving lunch to almost 400 students. District-wide, they prepared over 280 pounds of turkey. Longfellow staff and volunteers all pitched in to help with serving and to ensure the meal went off without a hitch. It brings me great pride to see how people come together time and time again to make this a memorable experience for our students. I’d also like to send an extra big thank you to our kitchen staff. They work hard to make sure our cafeteria is an inviting place for all and that no kid in our building is hungry. On a typical day, they serve around 300 lunches feeding two thirds of our school population. They truly are an amazing group of people.
Finally, I’d like to thank our families for getting students safely to school day in and day out. So much of life is showing up and a key to successful education is simply being present. During the 1st trimester we had almost one hundred students who didn’t miss a single day. This makes me proud.
Over the years, I’ve had parents ask, “How many days can a student miss?” There is no exact answer, but Colorado law states that students who have 3 unexcused absences in one month or 10 unexcused absences in a year are considered truant. Under school board policy, the main “excused” absences are for illness and medical appointments. Most other absences count as unexcused. All that being said, we’ve realized that truancy court isn’t the best solution. Sitting down with families and helping address barriers to attendance is. Another layer to attendance are students who miss 10% of the school year (16 days) regardless if those absences are considered excused or unexcused: These students are considered “chronically absent” by the federal government. In these cases, we want to work with families to develop an attendance plan to help remove barriers that may be causing attendance issues. With all attendance issues, please understand that we care about our students and our top priority is knowing they’re safe. If your child is going to be out, make sure you contact the attendance secretary Ms. Betty at (719) 530 5261. Additionally, if you are struggling with attendance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Familias de la Escuela Primaria Longfellow:
Con la llegada de esta época de agradecimiento, quiero comenzar agradeciendo a la Sra. Giangiulio y a los alumnos de primer grado por su increíble presentación de "Fiesta de Pijamas" la semana pasada. La alegría en los rostros de los niños lo decía todo, ya que tuvieron la oportunidad de brillar en el escenario. Me asombran constantemente las increíbles presentaciones que la Sra. G organiza con nuestros alumnos.
También quiero agradecer a nuestro personal de cocina. Ayer sirvieron nuestro almuerzo anual de Acción de Gracias a casi 400 alumnos. En todo el distrito, prepararon más de 127 kilos de pavo. El personal y los voluntarios de Longfellow colaboraron para servir y asegurar que la comida transcurriera sin ningún problema. Me llena de orgullo ver cómo la gente se une una y otra vez para hacer de esta una experiencia memorable para nuestros alumnos. También quiero agradecer especialmente a nuestro personal de cocina. Trabajan arduamente para asegurar que nuestra cafetería sea un lugar acogedor para todos y que ningún niño en nuestra escuela pase hambre. En un día normal, sirven alrededor de 300 almuerzos, alimentando a dos tercios de nuestra población estudiantil. Son un grupo de personas realmente increíbles.
Finalmente, quiero agradecer a nuestras familias por traer a los estudiantes a la escuela de forma segura día tras día. Gran parte de la vida consiste en estar presente, y una clave para una educación exitosa es simplemente estar ahí. Durante el primer trimestre, casi cien estudiantes no faltaron ni un solo día. Esto me llena de orgullo.
A lo largo de los años, algunos padres me han preguntado: "¿Cuántos días puede faltar un estudiante?". No hay una respuesta exacta, pero la ley de Colorado establece que los estudiantes que tienen 3 ausencias injustificadas en un mes o 10 ausencias injustificadas en un año se consideran ausentes sin justificación. Según la normativa del consejo escolar, las principales ausencias "justificadas" son por enfermedad y citas médicas. La mayoría de las demás ausencias se consideran injustificadas. Dicho esto, nos hemos dado cuenta de que el tribunal de absentismo escolar no es la mejor solución. Lo que sí lo es es reunirnos con las familias y ayudarles a superar los obstáculos que dificultan la asistencia. Otro aspecto importante de la asistencia son los estudiantes que faltan al 10% del año escolar (16 días), independientemente de si las ausencias están justificadas o no. El gobierno federal los considera "ausentes crónicos". En estos casos, queremos colaborar con las familias para desarrollar un plan de asistencia que ayude a eliminar los obstáculos que puedan estar causando problemas de asistencia. Ante cualquier problema de asistencia, queremos que sepan que nos preocupamos por nuestros estudiantes y que nuestra principal prioridad es su seguridad.
