Families of Longfellow Elementary-
Many exciting things are happening in Salida and at Longfellow as we enter into December. Especially at this time of year, we want you to know we appreciate you all. Our community is incredible. As we head towards the holidays, making ends meet can be tough for some. Add in to that the weather changing and we want to make sure our students are prepared to face the cold temperatures. If your child is in need of a warm coat, a stocking cap, or gloves, let us know and we’ll work to help make sure they have what they need to face winter in the mountains.
On the subject of bundling up for the weather, we’re in that season where we can have big temperature swings from day to day (and even hour to hour). We started the week in single digits, but the wind was calm and it was actually quite pleasant. The next day we were in the 20’s, but the wind made it feel much colder. Help us by making sure that your child is ready. If you have the type of child who likes to roll and play in the snow, consider adding in snow pants and boots to the rest of their cold weather gear. We’re only outside for 15 minutes at a time, but the right outerwear can help them be comfortable throughout the day.
This time of year (and really…year-round) staff works with our students on managing conflicts. With over 430 students, conflicts happen. As you have conversations at home, remind your child that Longfellow has the expectation that we keep our hands and feet to ourselves. Also, reinforce with them that if a conflict happens, to use their words. Our hope is to lay the groundwork for years to come, where all our students are able to firmly advocate for themselves with those around them. Obviously, with elementary age students that doesn’t always work. The next thing to remind them is to let a staff member know if something is happening that they don’t like. It helps us to be able to model how to work through conflicts, and if it is a more serious matter, it helps us address it immediately.
At some point, every parent has to have a discussion about cell phones and smart watches with their kids. This past week, the journal Pediatrics released a study that compared smart phone ownership and the age of acquisition with things like depression, obesity, and sleep patterns. You can learn more here: Pediatrics Smart Phone Study . Our school policy for cell phones and smart watches is that they are off and in a backpack during the school day. If you need to get a message to your child, please do so by calling 719-530-5260 and we’ll be sure that it gets relayed.
Finally, I need to beat the lost and found drum one more time. It’s gone down, but it seems when one coat leaves, two more return. Please, please, please check to see if any of your kids' stuff may have found its way in there. The last day before break, we will be donating the remaining items so that they can keep someone warm over the winter months.

Muchas cosas emocionantes están sucediendo en Salida y en Longfellow con la llegada de diciembre. Especialmente en esta época del año, queremos que sepan que los apreciamos a todos. Nuestra comunidad es increíble. Con la llegada de las fiestas, llegar a fin de mes puede ser difícil para algunos. Si a eso le sumamos el cambio de clima, queremos asegurarnos de que nuestros estudiantes estén preparados para enfrentar las bajas temperaturas. Si su hijo necesita un abrigo, un gorro o guantes, avísenos y trabajaremos para asegurarnos de que tenga lo necesario para afrontar el invierno en las montañas.
En cuanto a abrigarse bien, estamos en esa temporada en la que podemos tener grandes cambios de temperatura de un día para otro (e incluso de una hora a otra). Empezamos la semana con temperaturas de un solo dígito, pero el viento estaba en calma y la temperatura era bastante agradable. Al día siguiente, la temperatura rondaba los -6 °C, pero el viento hizo que la sensación térmica fuera mucho más fría. Ayúdenos a asegurar que su hijo esté preparado. Si tiene un hijo al que le gusta revolcarse y jugar en la nieve, considere añadir pantalones y botas de nieve a su ropa para el frío. Solo estamos afuera 15 minutos seguidos, pero la ropa de abrigo adecuada puede ayudarlos a estar cómodos durante todo el día.
En esta época del año (y en realidad… durante todo el año), el personal trabaja con nuestros estudiantes en la gestión de conflictos. Con más de 430 estudiantes, los conflictos ocurren. Mientras conversan en casa, recuérdele a su hijo que Longfellow espera que mantengamos nuestras manos y pies en silencio. Además, refuerce con él que, si surge un conflicto, debe usar sus palabras. Nuestra esperanza es sentar las bases para los próximos años, donde todos nuestros estudiantes puedan defenderse firmemente ante quienes los rodean. Obviamente, con los estudiantes de primaria esto no siempre funciona. Lo siguiente que debemos recordarles es que avisen a un miembro del personal si ocurre algo que no les gusta. Esto nos ayuda a modelar cómo resolver los conflictos y, si se trata de un asunto más serio, nos ayuda a abordarlo de inmediato.
En algún momento, todos los padres deben hablar con sus hijos sobre celulares y relojes inteligentes. La semana pasada, la revista Pediatrics publicó un estudio que comparó la posesión de teléfonos inteligentes y la edad de adquisición con factores como la depresión, la obesidad y los patrones de sueño. Nuestra política escolar respecto a los celulares y relojes inteligentes es que se mantengan apagados y en una mochila durante la jornada escolar. Por último, necesito insistir una vez más en el tema de objetos perdidos. Ya no se usa, pero parece que cuando se va un abrigo, vuelven dos más. Por favor, por favor, por favor, revisen si alguna de las cosas de sus hijos ha llegado ahí. El último día antes de las vacaciones, donaremos los artículos restantes para que puedan abrigar a alguien durante los meses de invierno.
