Families of Longfellow Elementary-
I’d like to start this week by extending our sincere thanks to Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, Salida Parks and Rec, the Salida Fire Department, GARNA, and the Fibark Board, for their support of our 4th annual “Every Kid in a PFD” program. With the river being such a big part of our town, river and water safety is something that we all must take seriously. A few years back, this group came together and created this event to educate our 3rd graders about river safety and how to be good ambassadors for our town. The biggest part of being able to play safely in our river is the utilization of a Personal Floatation Device (PFD). Through the efforts of these groups, each kid walks away from the event with their own PFD. I’m truly thankful for all these groups and the care they show for our kids and their safety, especially in and around the river.
With the cost of living in our community, I know that many of you are working multiple jobs and can’t take a week off. Our partners over at Boys and Girls club will be open throughout the Spring Break week from 8:30 to 5:30 to help out. If students are spending the day, they’ll need the $10 daily fee and a sack lunch. If you have any questions, you can contact them directly at (719) 539-9500.
After Spring Break, things seem to go faster and faster until we find ourselves at the end of the year. Spring Break is the time when students and staff reset and prepare for the final push. After break, 3rd and 4th grade go into their CMAS testing window. After that we have NWEA Maps testing at 1st through 4th grade levels. On top of that, we have Dibels reading tests for all students, field trips, swim lessons, field days, and much, much, more. Take some time this next week to help your student reset and prepare for this final push. More importantly, take some time to be together (even if it’s just watching a movie or sitting down to dinner as a family). If you’re working and they are bouncing off the walls when you come home, take a few deep breaths, tell them to put their shoes on and go for a walk around the block. Underneath it all, you are the most important person in their lives.

Quiero comenzar esta semana expresando nuestro sincero agradecimiento al Área Recreativa Arkansas Headwaters, al Departamento de Parques y Recreación de Salida, al Departamento de Bomberos de Salida, a GARNA y a la Junta de Fibark por su apoyo a nuestro cuarto programa anual "Cada niño con un PFD". Dado que el río es una parte tan importante de nuestra ciudad, la seguridad fluvial y acuática es algo que todos debemos tomar en serio. Hace unos años, este grupo se unió y creó este evento para educar a nuestros alumnos de tercer grado sobre la seguridad fluvial y cómo ser buenos embajadores de nuestra ciudad. La clave para jugar de forma segura en nuestro río reside en el uso de un Dispositivo de Flotación Personal (PFD). Gracias al esfuerzo de estos grupos, cada niño se va del evento con su propio PFD. Estoy realmente agradecido con todos estos grupos y el interés que demuestran por nuestros niños y su seguridad, especialmente dentro y alrededor del río.
Con el alto costo de vida en nuestra comunidad, sé que muchos de ustedes tienen varios trabajos y no pueden tomarse una semana libre. Nuestros socios del Boys and Girls Club estarán disponibles durante las vacaciones de primavera de 8:30 a 5:30 para ayudar. Después de las vacaciones de primavera, todo parece ir cada vez más rápido hasta que llegamos al final del año. Las vacaciones de primavera son el momento en que los estudiantes y el personal se reinician y se preparan para el último esfuerzo. Después de las vacaciones, 3.er y 4.º grado entran en su período de pruebas CMAS. Después de eso, tenemos las pruebas NWEA Maps para los niveles de 1.er a 4.º grado. Además, tenemos pruebas de lectura Dibels para todos los estudiantes, excursiones, clases de natación, días de campo y mucho, mucho más. Dediquen un tiempo la próxima semana a ayudar a su estudiante a reiniciarse y prepararse para este último esfuerzo. Y lo más importante, tómense un tiempo para estar juntos (aunque sea solo viendo una película o cenando en familia). Si estás trabajando y están emocionados al llegar a casa, respira hondo, diles que se pongan los zapatos y den una vuelta a la manzana. En el fondo, eres la persona más importante de sus vidas.
