The Salida Early Childhood Center is participating in the Child Abuse Prevention month (CAPM), in partnership with Family Youth Initiative (FYI). The 2025 theme is powered by hope, strengthened by prevention. The VISION is a world where all children and family are living a purposeful and happy life with hope for the future. By ensuring families have the support they need before challenges become crises, we can create a future filled with hope and opportunity!
For the month of April SECC invites schools and community members to participate in Child Abuse Prevention Month through showcasing youth art projects. SECC invites you to participate in their ART idea this year, KINDNESS ROCKS!
Please encourage youth and families to pick out a rock in their yard and paint it with washable paint (we recommend using the color blue or with a powerful prevention statement or pinwheel painted on it) .
Schools might have kids paint rocks at the school then showcase the kid’s artwork on campus or by sharing photos of the artwork.
Another idea is to play “hide and seek” with the decorated rocks & to share in the joy of PLAY!
Pictures of youth artwork are encouraged to be sent to Savanna at FYI: smoorefield@chaffeecounty.org who will post them on FYI’s social media

Did you know that F Street is the place to be on Halloween, and that some residents have as many as 900 trick-or-treaters visit their home?
To support this impressive coming together of ghosts, ghouls, princesses, super heroes, and other creatively clad hopeful Halloweeners, the community has come together to gather a bunch of treats to make sure this event lives up to all the expectations!
If you are interested in making a donation to support our F-Street community, candy can be dropped off at:
Salida Early Childhood Center
The Crest Academy
Salida Montessori Upper School
Salida Middle School
The City of Salida, Touber Bldg
The Salida Hot Springs Pool
The deadline for donations is Wednesday, October 30th, 2024.
Before the spoils of the collections are shared with F-Street, the students at the Crest Academy will incorporate the bags of candy into a number of learning opportunities, creating data about the types of candy, including weight and volume to use for graphing, and the 8th graders will map F Street as well.

Salida Schools Hosts Local First Responders for Active Shooter Training on 7/10

The Salida School District Board of Education will not be holding their normal monthly meeting for the month of July 2024.

Salida Schools Host Local First Responders for Active Shooter Training on 7/10
Local First Responders will conduct a multi-agency active shooter training at Salida High School on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. The community should expect to see an increased number of emergency vehicles and first responders in the area before and during the drill.
The training exercise will focus on coordinated emergency response to an active shooter on campus and is being organized by the Salida Police Department in collaboration with other agencies including Salida Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), and Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.
Jones Avenue, New Street, and State Streets will be closed in preparation for and during the drill.
No students will be involved in the drill. Some school district personnel will be on hand to observe, but will not participate in the drill. Because of the sensitive and tactical nature of the activities, the training is also closed to the general public and any media presence.
As part of the ongoing efforts of the school district and first responders to student safety, the drill aligns with the protocols of the Emergency Operating Plan that guides these partnerships. Salida Schools will also conduct reunifications drills after students return for the ’24-’25 school year, in addition to required routine drills throughout the year.
For additional information please contact Kim LeTourneau at 719-530-5225 or kletourneau@salidaschools.org.

Horizon's Exploratory Academy celebrated graduation on May 18, 2024 at The SteamPlant Event Center. Thirteen of the sixteen graduates participated in the ceremony, recognizing the largest graduating class from HEA in at least the last 10 years.
Huge congratulations to the dedicated group of students and a thank you to the teachers and staff who help guide these young minds to their next chapter!
