Sam Johnson Signs to Wrestle at Western State

Quote of the Week:

"When opportunity comes, it’s too late to prepare.” - John Wooden

Thank you:

Each week the activities department will highlight a group of people who help make our activities department run. This week we would like to thank our sponsors and donors who have given so generously to our SHS Sports teams, Athletic Booster Club, and SHS Activities. Our district is blessed with so many sponsors that want to ensure our student athletes have everything they need to be successful. Even the smallest of donations makes a big difference. Thank you for your support! We could not have student activities without you!

Shout outs:

Congratulations to our SHS Girls Basketball staff and team! The awards keep rolling in. Last week CHSAA announced their season ending awards. Our Spartans received the following awards.

  • 3A Coach of the Year: Chris Bainbridge

  • 3A All-State Team: Braeden Johnson (1st team), Graysa Kindle (2nd team) Reagan Osness (Honorable Mention)

Congratulations to the SHS Girls Soccer team for getting their first win (5-0) of the season vs Lake County behind 3 goals from Skya Gorby. Credit also goes to Linzie Sewolt for clearing a ball off the line to keep the shut out for Ruby Bischoff.

Congratulations to the SHS Baseball team for picking up their first 2 wins of the season this past weekend.

Congratulations to the SHS Track team for their outstanding performance at Chaparral this past weekend. The team had numerous top 8 finishes to include 6 individual champions. Special shoutout to the girls 4x400. Zy Boone, Leah Paschal, Kayle Johnson and Nora Paschal had to run the race all by themselves after being interfered with during their first attempt. Despite having no competition to run with they crushed an outstanding time of 4:20 and potentially qualified the relay for state. Individual champions:

  • Myah Scott, 1st in the High Jump, 5'4" and 1st in the100m Hurdles, 15.69

  • Bryce Hudson, 1st in the Shot, 44' 2.5" and 1st in the Discus, 140' 5"

  • Jackson Shomion, 1st in the 1600m run, 4:42.38

  • Jack Baker, 1st in the High Jump, 6'3"

AD’s Remarks:

Sam Johnson was able to take advantage of the opportunity to continue to wrestle at the next level because of the hundreds of hours of preparation he put into his academics and training. All too often opportunities are missed because we were not properly prepared. It is never too late to start. Set your goals, develop a plan to reach your goals, and let nothing get in the way of your plan.

We host our only home high school track meet this Saturday. I encourage everyone to come out and support these athletes. You will be inspired! We still need a few more volunteers to help us run the track meet. Reach out to Activities Assistant Cassie Luttrell if you can help! Email cluttrell@salidaschools.org

Finally, we still have tickets available for the girls' soccer game against Buena Vista on April 14th. We will honor our STATE CHAMPION Girls' Basketball team with a parade that starts at 4:15 down F Street, tailgating at 4:45 with the team, and a ceremony during halftime of the soccer game. Use this link to purchase your tickets now. We can't wait to celebrate and share our immense Spartan Pride with this history making team!
