Quote of the Week:

"You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” - Zig Ziglar

Thank you:

Thank you to all the wonderful people that have helped make me and my new staff feel welcome and appreciated to start the year. You only get one chance to have a first impression and the SHS Community has passed that test with flying colors. Please continue spreading that warmth, positivity and care to all those in the community and to those who visit us here at the High School for athletic and activity events.

Shout outs/Results:

  • Boys Golf: The Boys Golf team has been in competition mode for two weeks now! As a team they finished 4th in their first Tri Peaks League Match on 8/13. The Spartans were lead by Ryus Mattix who shot a 77 at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Course in Colorado Springs. They also placed 14th at the Palmer Terror invite on 8/18 against 4A and 5A competition.

  • Boys Soccer: “Kicked Off” the season in style with both Varsity and JV securing a 10-0 win against Alamosa on Saturday. The boys soccer team is looking to build upon their stellar results from last year!

  • Girls Volleyball: Starting their season with a bang, the Volleyball team swept Center in three sets last Thursday. 25-15, 25-12, 25-18.  The girls pushed through some early nerves and mistakes, rallying to a strong finish!

AD’s Remarks:

At the beginning of a season/year, there is always a lot of talk about GOALS. What are the team's goals? What are individual players' goals? These are great questions and good for us to identify where we want to go, but sometimes we often focus on the wrong part of the goal.

A definition of a Goal that I really like is Goal: the result to which effort is aimed. The first part of the definition is what we often focus on. The Result. But what if we shifted our mindset to focus on the second part of the definition, where our “effort is aimed”. This helps us focus on what we can control and is “The Process” of achieving our goals. We can’t control what the refs, the other team, or even our teammates do, but we can control how much effort we aim at our goal.

The Salida High School Activities and Athletic Departments have lofty goals, however our focus is not on the end results, but in the Process. We aim to push ourselves to get a little bit better everyday until one day we reach our goals. We may not be there today, but we are starting!

Question of The Week: Each week we will add a thought provoking question to talk about with your athlete/family.

If you had a reminder you put on the mirror for yourself to see in the morning, what would it say? Why?
