Colorado higher education institutions to waive application fees from Oct. 7-9

The eighth annual Colorado Free Application Days campaign encourages Colorado residents to continue their education beyond high school

To inspire more Coloradans to continue their education, all 32 public colleges and universities in Colorado and several private institutions will allow students to apply for free from Oct. 7- 9 as part of Colorado Free Application Days.

Colorado Free Application Days caps off Colorado Applies Month, a statewide campaign that encourages high school juniors and seniors to explore, chart and execute a post-high school path. Once students select a goal—such as applying to an apprenticeship program—they are connected to resources and tools that will help them achieve major goals and action steps along the way. Admissions application information for each institution is available on the campaign website at https://cdhe.colorado.gov/cofreeappdays and fees will be waived for applications submitted from Oct. 7-9.

The statewide push is designed to increase Colorado’s college-going and FAFSA and CASFA completion rates. The campaign strategically aims to support low-income and first-generation students, while keeping Colorado students in state. According to 2023 numbers from CDHE’s Pathways to Prosperity Report, 49.9% of high school graduates enrolled in postsecondary education the fall after graduation (a slight decrease from 2020) - race and ethnicity enrollment gaps persist.

“Our workforce demands that Coloradans are equipped with a postsecondary education and Colorado Free Application Days brings us one step closer to achieving that,” said Gov. Jared Polis. “As we look ahead, our economy depends on a workforce that has the skills to fill the most in-demand jobs and careers of tomorrow.”

By waiving application fees—a common barrier to higher education—Colorado Free Application Days aims to improve access to further education and training, which is becoming increasingly critical in the state’s rapidly-changing economy. The 2024 Colorado Talent Pipeline Report identified that 95.1% of Colorado’s Tier 1 top jobs and 62.3% of Tier 2 top jobs require a credential beyond high school. However, only 62.9% of Coloradans 25- 64 years old hold a postsecondary credential, indicating a supply-and-demand gap for some occupations.

In response to these workforce demands, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education set a strategic goal to increase the number of Coloradans benefiting from valuable career skills, obtained while in high school or via postsecondary education, that –at a minimum– enable additional lifetime earnings greater than the cost of attendance, in its statewide plan for higher education, Building Skills for an Evolving Economy. Increasing postsecondary enrollment and reducing equity gaps—the racial disparities in educational attainment—are priority strategies to improve access and reduce costs for Coloradans.

The SHS National Honor Society is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive, on Thursday, May 1, 2025 in the main gym at Salida High School from 9 am to 3 pm. To make an appointment or for more information, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org and use sponsor code: SalidaCO. Bring a photo ID or your blood donor car, or two other forms of ID. Donors must check in at the SHS main office and will have an SHS NHS escort take them to the donation site. You can save up to 15 minutes when you donate blood by using RapidPass! Visit redcrossblood.org/rapidpass for more information. A message from the SHS NHS: The Salida High School National Honors Society students are planning and organizing an American Red Cross Blood Drive. By participating in this program, we will give students extra community service opportunities that could help save lives! In response to the need for blood in our community and the desire to help our students participate in more community service activities, we are asking for your support and participation in our upcoming blood drive. Besides encouraging your son or daughter (if they’re eligible) to donate blood at our upcoming blood drive on May 1st from 9 AM - 3 PM, we are inviting you to donate blood, as well. By donating blood, you and your student will stand out and set a positive example for other students and their parents to get involved. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of hospital patients in our area and across the nation. This is a community service that is both easy and rewarding! Even if you cannot donate blood, you can still help by encouraging your student to donate. To be eligible to donate, you must be healthy, at least 17 years old (or 16 with a parental permission slip), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have given blood in the past 56 days. We think that you will agree that this is a wonderful community service opportunity for all of us, and we ask for your full support. Please reach out to SHS teacher Paul Brackmann, or any of our NHS students with questions, or to get a permission slip for students who are 16 years of age.

Salida Schools Host Local First Responders for Active Shooter Training on 7/10 Local First Responders will conduct a multi-agency active shooter training at Salida High School on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. The community should expect to see an increased number of emergency vehicles and first responders in the area before and during the drill. The training exercise will focus on coordinated emergency response to an active shooter on campus and is being organized by the Salida Police Department in collaboration with other agencies including Salida Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), and Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office. Jones Avenue, New Street, and State Streets will be closed in preparation for and during the drill. No students will be involved in the drill. Some school district personnel will be on hand to observe, but will not participate in the drill. Because of the sensitive and tactical nature of the activities, the training is also closed to the general public and any media presence. As part of the ongoing efforts of the school district and first responders to student safety, the drill aligns with the protocols of the Emergency Operating Plan that guides these partnerships. Salida Schools will also conduct reunifications drills after students return for the ’24-’25 school year, in addition to required routine drills throughout the year. For additional information please contact Kim LeTourneau at 719-530-5225 or kletourneau@salidaschools.org.
